Even as a resident in Mexico I have had the situation where they show you the dollar amount when paying with credit card (even though it has thankfully been quite rare) and it's confusing! I would add that sometimes small corner stores won't want be able to break even a 500 peso bill, so if you can get smaller bills, you'll be glad you have them, and definitely bigger chain stores will usually be able to (like Oxxo) :)
