Near the pier where the ships docked was this amazing water ski show. A big seating area for spectators. A big mariachi band. And like 25 ladies in swim suits towed behind a big speed boat. When that boat took off, the mariachi band played at full volume. Giant searchlights focused on the ladies in water skis towed behind the big boat. I've never seen anything like that since. Aca was a really happening place.

I think it was really big back in the 70s. It's SOOO beautiful. Thanks for your compliment on the photos, it's hard to take a bad picture there!!!

Mexico City apeople travel to Acapulco since it nearby. Most Mexicans go to the local beach.

People in Oaxaca go to Puerto Escondido. Guadalajara to Puerto Vallarta/Coastal Jalisco.

It really is easy to get to from CDMX!

At one time, aca was like the las Vegas of mexico. All the big Latin American stars would play there in the nice hotels. Las Vegas had the American stars. Acá had the Latin American market. Big time. It was so cool. At night after the sun went down, the mallecon was loaded with tourists walking from cantina to cantina. Each beach side cantina had a different band playing. We would walk from the pier where the ships docked, all the way downtown. Then maybe take a cab back to the ship. Very good memories.

Another near gateway for locals is Valle De Bravo (Mexico’s Hampton) and Tepoztlán

I haven't been to Acapulco in decades but loved it. Our neighbor, formerly from Cuernavaca, always went there since the time he was in his teens. I think back then it was Really big. The bay is so gorgeous. You've done such a great job in detailing all the details in today's post. Makes me yearn for the west coast! And the photos are fabulous.

Also, you can take a luxury bus from cdmx to aca. Do research and find the most expensive bus. These buses are not like our Greyhound buses. They are palatial buses akin to what one sees in Europe.

We've taken that type of bus to San Miguel de Allende, they are very nice!

If the bus stops and a little girl gets on the bus and hands out cookies, they expect a tip.

One time the bus stopped , the girl got on the bus and started handing out cookies. My father didn't know. He thought they were free! I told him him give her SOMETHING. He gave her a centavo 😂

The Mex. Govt decided to invest in the Cancun side because it's closer to the USA and European tourists. And the sand on the Cancun side is fine like sugar. In Cancun side there are all inclusive hotels that cater exclusively to French and Germans. One never needs to leave the resort.

In the early days the beach was infested with flies. All the nice hotels were built up high on the hills away from the flies. The city has a long history.

Stephanie Thurrott's avatar

Interesting! I had no idea. I guess the flies have gone away!

If they were down on that beach you and Paul would have written about them. Also, that mid day sun is a killer. I tried to walk from cruise ship all the way downtown and felt heat stroke getting me

Paul and Steph, love the Acapulco highlights and reviews. I think that you should start adding in some tequila and mezcal reviews.

Stephanie Thurrott's avatar

Maybe just tequila, Paul isn’t a fan of mezcal!
