No place is perfect. Mexico City has pollution, noise, and poverty issues, among many others. But the magic of this place is how many boxes it ticks, how much better it isโfor usโthan anywhere else weโve visited.
In a recent videoโcalled Why Mexico?โwe used a list of 10 reasons why we love Mexico City that we had created two years earlier and re-evaluated the place, comparing it to Berlin, Germany. A city weโve visited several times, most recently earlier this month.
But there are more than 10 reasons why Mexico City makes more sense for us than Berlin, or any other city in Europe or elsewhere. And we thought it might be interesting to briefly discuss a few of them. Starting with this.
Those traveling to Mexico from the United States, like us, donโt need to worry about their laptops, phones, or any other electronics or devices that require electrical power: Mexico uses the same two-prong (Type A) and three-prong (Type-B) power plugs as the U.S., and with a compatible voltage range. (120 volts in the U.S., and 127 volts in Mexico.) So thereโs no need to pack, carry, or keep track of power adapters or converters, as you do in Europe and other parts of the world.

This is a huge convenience. Like many international travelers, we have bags full of converters and adapters we sort through and bring with us each time we travel to Europe and elsewhere. Not having to worry about this isnโt just convenient for travel: We own an apartment in Mexico City and donโt have to worry about appliances, TVs, speakers, or other electrical devices. Everything works the same.
The one thing we do think about, of course, is power surges. Our refrigerator, clothes washer, and TV are all connected to the wall with surge protectors. But in over two years, the electricity has been quite reliable. Weโve had fewer outages in Mexico City than weโve had in Pennsylvania in the same time frame.
A small thing? Maybe. But itโs another win for Mexico City.

In all seriousness, this is a game changer! Much less packing and weight to carry ;)
